100 Objects Assignment Guidelines

Assignment Guidelines
Create three installations using 100 objects. Use the same 100 objects for each installation. Each installation is a different location. Choose an object from list below. Several in-process and final solutions photos needed for each installation. See details below, "What to put on your blog" before you begin. Several class meetings, where each student presents their progress, are scheduled so we can discuss and offer feedback. 

Important - Final solution in the form of photographs. Images must be presented in person on the due date for work to be considered turned in on time. Those who do not present images in person will receive a late grade for the work. 

Objective
Explore various types of spaces to gain an understanding of how we interact with and experience space. 
Analyze the elements and principles as well as content and meaning present in a space and selected objects to create an innovative solution of merging the two.

Consider the qualities of the chosen object. 

  • Is there a hook or hole allowing the ability to hang or tie the object to a structure. Any material used for hanging/tying must be all the same. I suggest saving this option for the last installation so you don't have to untie/unstring objects in a timely manner to complete additional installations.
  • Can the object be inserted in the earth? 
  • Can you stack the objects? 
  • Can the objects attach to each other? 
  • Can the objects attach to a surface/structure by means of tape? Tape cannot be visible. Blue painters tape wont leave a mark and can hold lightweight items. 


Explore various environments for installation. 
  • Spend time observing the environment. Consider interior spaces as well as exterior. 
  • Experience space in different ways - what types of "space" do you see when lying on the floor in your home? Looking up? 
  • Take walks around downtown St. Augustine and observe the many unique spaces present in the landscape/architecture. Observe below eye level for spaces one may normally not notice. 
  • Consider spaces in your yard or at locations such as beach, park. 
  • An enclosed/small interior - cupboard, drawer, refrigerator. You will need to remove existing items from the interior, allowing the 100 objects to respond/unite with the spatial qualities.
  • Interior space such as a corner, windowsill, doorway. 
  • Consider how the shapes, lines, textures of objects and the chosen space can create a dynamic, meaningful design. Strive for innovation. 
  • Are the objects large enough to cover an area? 
  • Are you able to "string" the objects for hanging? 
  • Can the objects attach to one another or a structure? 
  • Can the objects be folded, compacted? 

Document the work with photos:
  • Each installation will require a set of images to best communicate the idea. Take several, more than you think you need, images of each installation. Begin with an image from a distance, followed with images that document you approaching the installation site. Take images from various angles and details (close-up). 
  • Make sure photos are good quality. Check photos for quality before you dismantle installation and move to the next. 
  • Bring all photos to class for class discussion. Several class sessions are reserved for students to show images. Keep in mind, you will have to do several installations before you arrive at three that are successful. The class discussions will help guide you/provide ideas for the development of each installation. 
  • During class discussions we will decide on the appropriate number of photos for each installation. Keep in mind, some installations may need only one photo, others may need five. 
  • The final solution for this assignment is documentation of each installation in the form of images posted on your blog. 

OBJECT IDEAS

See list below for ideas. Feel free to discuss object ideas with me before you purchase/collect. Please recycle materials after project complete. Recycling includes putting items in recycle bin, disperse usable objects to friends/family for continued use, save craft like items for future projects or return items to nature.
  • Food items. Walk the aisles of the grocery store for ideas. Bread, pasta, seeds, nuts, individually wrapped candy, tea bags, sugar packets.
  • Non-food items at grocery store. A few ideas include toothpicks, wood skewer sticks for BBQ, plastic spoons/forks/knives (do not mix), small paper or plastic cups (all the same), clothespins, straws (all the same)
  • Hardware items. Walk the nuts and bolts aisle of hardware store. Nails, screws, washers and many other interesting hardware items. 
  • Small Rocks/Pebbles (all the same, can collect from nature or buy bags at hardware store)
  • Sticks from Nature (all the same length, between 6 inches and 10 inches)
  • Coins (all the same)
  • Binder Clips (all the same size and color)
  • Rubber Bands (all the same size)
  • Plastic Grocery Bags (all the same)
  • Dominoes
  • Jingle Bells (sold in packages at craft stores)
  • Pom Poms (all the same color, sold in packages at craft stores)
  • Pens/Pencils/Markers (must all be the same, do not mix)
  • Small Mirrors (can purchase from craft stores)
DO NOT USE THESE OBJECTS:
  • Buttons
  • Beads
  • Crayons
  • Paper Clips
  • Cotton Swabs/Q-Tips
  • Cupcake Liners
  • Canned Drink Tabs
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Marbles
  • Toilet Paper Rolls
  • Pasta/beans
  • Coffee Filters
  • Popsicle Sticks

WHAT TO POST ON YOUR BLOG:
  • A total of three photos in one post. 
  • Select one photo for each installation. 
  • Label each photo. For example, "100 lightbulbs installed in an oven."
  • Label the post "100 Objects". 
  • Note - Depending on your idea, your installation may need more than one photo. If this is the case, it will be discussed during class when you present your idea. Go to "100 Objects Student Work" in the right index column to see examples of multiple photos for a location. 
  • Optional - Keep images of all your attempts (work in progress). If you decide to keep these images, please make sure the images are in a separate post labeled "100 Objects In Progress".
