Specimen Collection Assignment Guidelines

Assignment:

Students will make a paper sculpture that reflects ideas associated with a specimen collection. The sculpture will consist of a container with three sections and three specimens. A visit to the science lab here on campus and historical information from the book To Have and To Hold will offer inspiration for the specimens. The specimens will be "hybrids", merging two formal observations from the real world to create an innovative, invented specimen.

Student work will be juried for an exhibition on February 5, first floor Proctor Library. Details discussed in class.

hybrid | ˈhībrəd | noun 1 the offspring of two plants or animals of different species or varieties, such as a mule (a hybrid of a donkey and a horse): the bird was a hybrid of a goose and a swan | a hybrid of wheat and rye. 2 a thing made by combining two different elements; a mixture: the final text is a hybrid of the stage play and the film. • a word formed from elements taken from different languages, for example television (tele- from Greek, vision from Latin). • (also hybrid car) a car with a gasoline engine and an electric motor, each of which can propel it. adjective 1 bred as a hybrid from different species or varieties: a hybrid variety | hybrid offspring. 2 of mixed character; composed of different elements: Mexico's hybrid post-conquest culture. • (of a motor vehicle) having both a gasoline engine and an electric motor, each of which can propel it: these hybrid cars can be driven over short distances in electric-only mode. • involving a mixture of work or study conducted in the usual location and from home, making use of computer technology: there are concerns that shifting to hybrid working may only benefit those with office jobs | hybrid learning is the key to education in the near future.
