Fact Box, Assignment Guidelines

·     Assignment:
Design and construct a box in the form of a tray design to visually communicate a contemporary or historical social issue. Think of the box as "packaging" for factual information.

Objective:
Conceptual development of a personal idea as well as design and building skills specific to a functional item such as packaging.

Materials:
Wood (can use Balsa or scrap wood from wood shop)
Black Foam Board with clean cuts (will need straight pins)
·
Guidelines:
·
o  The title will be displayed on the outside of the box.
o  Methods for applying title to outside of box – wood burning, painting (I suggest using a stencil for clean lines), vinyl letters, wood letters.
The box design will be a tray design. See example images below.
·     The interior of the box will contain two compartments.
·     Each compartment will contain a cubes that fits snugly in the compartment.
o  At least four surfaces of the six sided cube will present facts related to the topic of the fact box.
o  The cubes can be made from paper or wood.
o  Methods for applying facts to cubes: wood burning, vinyl letters, handwrite.
o  You can use printed words only if you are designing cubes out of paper. This means you can print text on the paper before folding. Do not collage printed words to the surface.
o  Facts do not have to be presented with words. Can use images. Semiotics.
·     You can apply wood stain to the box and cubes. Do not paint. The paint will not allow the box and cubes to function – too sticky.
Size – at least 12 inches in one direction
