ASSIGNMENT:
Create a to-scale cardboard replica of a blender or coffee maker. Both items are available in the studio. Students choose one to replicate and must replicate the item I have provided in the studio. All shapes, angles, raised surfaces, textures will be replicated with cardboard. If you can feel a shape/texture with your hands, then you have to replicate with cardboard.
OBJECTIVE:
A beginning challenge that exposes students to basic construction methods for a three-dimensional structure.

MATERIALS:
STEPS TO FOLLOW:
Step 1:
- Cardboard
- Utility Knife
- Scissors
- Paper/pencil/mask tape (for the small paper model - can be any kind of paper)
- Silver Duct Tape
- Black Duct Tape
- Vinyl Measure Tape (available for use in the studio)
- Ruler (available for use in the studio)
STEPS TO FOLLOW:
Step 1:
- Decide which item you want to replicate - blender or coffee maker. Both are available in the studio. Must use the blender or coffee make I provide so I have the object available to grade your work.
- Draw a diagram of the item you selected. Use a cloth measuring tape to take all measurements.
- Measure every shape, angle, line.
- Make note of all measurements on the diagram. Below is an image to help with measuring. If you need help measuring, let me know so I can help.
Step 2:
Step 3:
- Build a small scale model of the item you selected. The model does not have to be "pretty" - you can use copy paper or scrap paper, scotch/mask tape.
- Model should be approximately six inches in height (hint - a dollar bill measures six inches).
- Model should be the basic form. Do not build three-dimensional details on the paper model. Note - you will build all details on the final solution.
- Spend no more than 30-minutes building the model.
- Think of the model as a three-dimensional sketch.
- Begin building final structure out of cardboard.
- A demo will be done in class to show students how to safely use a utility knife to cut the cardboard with the following techniques:
- Score
- Stack
- Hinge
- Tab
- Use mask tape to hold pieces in place while building.
- Once structure is sturdy, apply sliver and black duct tape to reflect the black/silver colors of the appliances.
- All shapes, angles, raised surfaces, textures will be replicated with cardboard. Do not draw on details. If you can feel a shape/texture with your hands, then you have to replicate with cardboard.
- Option to add red color for switch on coffee pot and use a fine point black Sharpie for words on blender.
Evaluation Criteria:
- Refer to the document in File Section in Canvas entitled "Evaluation Criteria". The document has the evaluation criteria for all assignments.
