Objective
- Expose students to the history of St. Augustine.
- Students practice observation skills of elements and principles, analyze and apply to create visual content.
- Provide an opportunity for students to use this information to develop personal ideas that visually communicate innovation.

Materials
- Rives BFK paper and/or Bristol paper (in your kit + I have paper for students)
- Cut matt (in your kit)
- Ruler (in your kit)
- Paper folder (in your kit)
- Black ballpoint and/or tech pen, graphite pencil, ink.
- Exacto Knife (in your kit)
- Elmers white wood glue (in your kit). Use a toothpick to spread glue across the surface so tacky. Do place blobs
- not Option to incorporate balsa wood or another type of wood.
- Option to use Innovation Center to cut/print on paper or wood.
- If you want to laser cut shapes from paper, use the paper I provide. Go to website for innovation center, scroll down to box that states "technology use request". Submit your request. Link below.

Guidelines
- Each sculpture merges design details from at least two (2) buildings.
- The buildings cannot be the same for each model.
- Do not place models on a base.
- Each model needs to measure at least 11" length x 11" width and at least 8" in height.
- Color is not required. If using color, no more than two colors. If you have an idea for more than two, see me to discuss.
Steps to Follow:
Step 1
Physically visit at least four (4) local buildings.
See list of buildings below. All buildings are located within walking distance of Flagler Campus.
Step 2
Take at least six (6) photos of each building. Include images of building details. Take the time to explore all details of the building.
Step 3
Spend time at each building, observing details. Through writing, describe at least three (3) visual details for each building. These are observations you make while visiting the building (color, line, shape, texture, patterns).
Step 4
Gather information about the history of the building. This can be done by taking pamphlets from the site building and/or gleaning information from the internet.
Step 5
Use the images, written descriptions and history to sketch four (4) different ideas.
- Two ideas for each sculpture.
Each idea merges design details from at least two (2) buildings.
- The buildings cannot be the same for each model. Each model demonstrates design qualities of two (2) different buildings.
- Consider how the history of each building can be represented in your design.
- Strive for innovation.
- Final solution does not have to visually represent the historic buildings. Your design can visually communicate contemporary design.
- You can sketch on paper or on the computer.
- If on paper use a sharpie (or very dark/heavy pencil lines) so when you photograph and place image on blog, image is presentable to class. Pencil lines do not transfer well to the digital screen in Studio 3.
- AI generated designs are accepted in addition to the four sketches.
Step 6
Place photos, written observations, history and sketches on your blog. Organize information according to the list below and label accordingly.

Step 7
Present photos, written observations and sketches to the class. This date announced in class. No make up presentations. Up to 5-points deducted from final assignment grade for not presenting or poor/missing information.
Step 8
Begin work on final solutions. Remember, you are constructing two (2) architecture models that utilize two (2) different buildings. The buildings cannot be the same for each model.
Each model demonstrates design qualities of two (2) different buildings.
Consider how the history of each building can be represented in your design.
Step 10
After models are complete, post required information on your personal blog for this class. See details in blog checklist document in File Section in Canvas.
Buildings To Visit. Must select buildings from list below.
- Observe exterior architecture design.
- Some buildings have no fee to enter. Therefore additional information can be gained from observing the interior architecture.
- Some buildings require a fee to enter, others do not.
- 24 buildings within walking distance of campus.
- 2 buildings are a bit of a further walk (Fountain of Youth Park and Our Lady le Lecha). Fountain of Youth requires a fee to enter and view the hut. Our Lady le Lecha no fee.

The hotel can be observed from the sidewalk and is a public space so you can enter interior space for observation as well.
Solla-Carcaba Cigar Factory

Building currently operating as an office building. View/observe from the interior. Last I checked, front door was card keyed.
Ximenez-Fatio House Museum

A fee to enter the building. However, many architectural details to photograph from the outside, on the property. Enter ticket office and let staff know you are photographing building for a project for my class. If you wish to enter the building, ticket fee $5 with your Flagler ID.
Father O'Reilly House Museum

Museum is in process of reopening. You can observe exterior details from the street.
St. Francis Barracks

Today the building is used as the headquarters for the Florida National Guard. Observe from the sidewalk, you will not be able to enter.
Tovar House

If you wish to enter the complex of buildings, fee is $4 with Flagler Student ID. You can observe architecture from the street. Entering the complex will allow you to see the entire building plus the oldest house.
