Make It Roll Assignment Guidelines

Assignment:
Using cardboard and tape, design and construct a sphere that can roll.

Objective:
Challenge construction skills to create a functional form.

Materials:
  • Cardboard - each student needs 2 - 3 medium boxes.
  • Masking Tape and/or Duct Tape (I have duct tape for students)
  • Utility Knife - large box cutter knife. Cannot use Exacto Knife.
  • Card Stock. I will provide.
  • Scissors

Step 1
  • Create a maquette (a small model).
  • Use card stock. Masking tape works best for the maquette. Scotch tape is also an option.

Step 2
  • Begin final solution.
  • Must be between 20" - 22" diameter.
  • Use only cardboard and mask and/or duct tape.
  • No stacking cardboard.

Step 3
  • As a class, we will gather outside Proctor Library, near the ramp.
  • Each student will have a chance to demonstrate their design, "make it roll".
