Touch Response Assignment Guidelines

Purchase or rent the book at Flagler Bookstore.
A copy of the book is on reserve in the Proctor Library.

"Diane Ackerman's lusciously written grand tour of the realm of the senses includes conversations with an iceberg in Antarctica and a professional nose in New York, along with dissertations on kisses and tattoos, sadistic cuisine and the music played by the planet Earth. "Delightful . . . gives the reader the richest possible feeling of the worlds the senses take in."--The New York Times.

Assignment:
  • Read Touch Chapter.
  •  Create two artworks in response to two different sections of the reading.
    • Can be a small drawing/painting done on any surface with any medium.
    • Or a small sculpture (made from nature, found objects, any material(s)).
    • Or you can “stage” a photo shoot and produce a digital image.
    • Or a short, 30 second to 1 minute, video.
    • Or you can produce a sound recording.
  • Post each artwork on your blog
  • For each artwork include title, dimensions and medium.
  • For each artwork, quote the section of the reading that you used for inspiration. After each quote, add the author's name and title of the book and cite the page number.
  • For each artwork include an artist statement. Use paragraph form. Type should be flush left, not centered. Check spelling, punctuation and grammar. Do not post the first draft of your writing. Edit. Statement should be clear, concise, direct. Statement should not ramble or come off as if you are talking/thinking aloud.

Innovative and thoughtful solutions are expected.
  • If photography is your chosen medium for this assignment, make sure photos are thoughtfully developed formally and conceptually.
  • Random photos are not acceptable. Example of random photos include:
    • Photographs of people holding hands and/or of hands.
    • Photographs of your tattoo (or a friend's).
    • Photographs of your pet or you petting/holding/touching your pet.

Examples
  • Search right column, "Touch Student Work".
  • Search right column, "Touch Artists".
  • If viewing on your phone and right column does not appear, scroll to bottom and click on "view web version".

Due Date
  • Due date announced in class.
  • Posting the two artworks with the required info for each on the due date is how you turn in this project. I will check your blog to view the artwork and the required information for each artwork.
  • Remember, I am looking for innovative responses. Avoid cliches, predictable solutions.
  • This assignment is one of two that will be posted on your blog during the semester.
  • All other postings due end of semester.
