Annie Thompson, Student Work, Map Relief

Statement:
The artwork maps the levels of a person’s vulnerability. The figure on top represents the outer image, or, even a first impression. The intricate paper cuts represent the many unique qualities that are intriguing. Upon further investigation, the viewer is presented with the concept that the figure is paper thin - symbolizing no depth. The only way to gain a true understanding of another person is time. The horizontal wooden board separating the two figures represents a timeline. As it reads left to right, tally marks and a value scale document the experiences. This accumulation of experiences is represented in the lower figure, made up large collection of small, ripped pieces of paper. Although each individual piece of paper is not perfect, altogether the pieces form an identity.

Paper, balsa wood, charcoal, ink, floral frog.
