Wearable Paper Sculpture Assignment Guidelines

Assignment:
Design and construct a paper sculpture that can be worn on the body. Use design skills to select a location for photographing. Use design skills to style and pose a model wearing the sculpture in selected location. Final solution is a series of photographs depicting a model wearing the paper sculpture.

Note-You are not making a garment. Arms, torso and legs will be covered with a conical form. 


Objective:
Use the height, width and depth of human figure to solve spatial challenges. Challenge the student to create an innovative design that can be worn on the body. Provide an opportunity for the student to design beyond the object with regards to photographing the final solution (select a location, style and pose the model).


Materials:

• All types of paper are acceptable: copy paper, brown paper grocery bags, newspaper, brown or white craft paper rolls. 
• Plastic bags also an option. 
• Use tape or staples. Glue is also an option.
• You can combine above materials. 
• Use only the materials listed above. 
• Do not use patterned/colored wrapping paper, tissue paper. colored construction paper.  

Guidelines:

• No added color. Use only the color/tones of materials. 
• The sculpture will cover the body from neck to ankles. The basic structure is a conical shape, bell shape. The sculpture will cover arms, torso, legs. There will be no opening exposing the front of the body. 
• Do not make a garment. Do not make sleeves, pants. 
• Consider the back of the sculpture. Will patterns and textures that appear on front of sculpture wrap around to the back? Or will the backside have elements attached? Or a separate design that unites with the front?
• You can assemble in sections or make one piece. Sewing pattern diagrams for a cape/cloak provide a visual image for the basic shape. You may extend/enhance/manipulate to create an innovative design. 
• Consider elements and principles of art and design to create non-predictable solutions. You will have to manipulate materials beyond basic expectations. Consider weaving the paper, twisting paper to create "rope-like" forms. Tape can also be twisted. Consider how tape can create lines and shapes. Consider combining the texture of paper and plastic. Consider how the paper can create texture. Clear packing tape could be used to create a "window" in the garment. Staples can be repeated to create a pattern or textured area. Consider paper pulp, paper folding, paper cutting. 

• Method of attachment must be incorporated into the design. For example, if using masking tape, consider how you will use the color/tone of the tape as a design element. 
• Consider elements and principles. Can you fold/roll/twist paper in small shapes and attach? Consider pleating/folding the paper to create pattern/repetition. How can you create texture with the paper? Will the texture you create serve as a focal point? 

Step 1. LOOK:

• Go to the category "Wearable Paper Sculpture Inspiration" in the right side bar. 
• Scroll through the many pages of blog posts. 

Step 2. SKETCH:

• Prepare two different ideas. Include notes/labels in your sketches so I can have a basic understanding of your idea.
• Take photos of your sketches and upload in your discussion thread in Canvas before the due date (see course calendar). Make sure photos are good quality. 

Step 3. CONSTRUCT:

• When a final decision has been made regarding a design, gather materials and begin construction.

Step 4. PHOTOGRAPH SCULPTURE ON MODEL:

• Find someone to wear the sculpture. This person can be you. 
• See document attached to the assignment module in Canvas. The document is titled "Wearable_ Photographs".
• Answer the questions. Submit completed document to your discussion thread in Canvas by the due date (see course calendar in Canvas). 
• A total of five (5) images are needed. Three (3) of entire sculpture on the model from various angles and two (2) details. Can have more than five images. Consider photos that view the sculpture from different perspectives. For instance, what if you photograph the model while sitting on the floor. 
• Do not immediately dispose of the sculpture after photographing. You many need to re-shoot images. 
• Use Photoshop (or other image editing tools) to produce the best quality photographs. 
• If you are not completing this project via online learning, you have the option to use the photo studio, upstairs in art building. The studio requires reservations. See me if you are interested in using the photo studio. 
• Upload final photos to the assignment module in Canvas.
