EXAMPLES OF ARTISTS WORKING WITH CARDBOARD:

MATERIALS:
  • Cardboard. Students gather cardboard on their own.
  • Duct tape
  • Utility knife
  • Cloth tape measure
  • Ruler
  • Mask Tape (used to hold cardboard together while you put on final layer of duct tape)
  • Paper/pencil

STEPS TO FOLLOW:
Step 1:
  • Find a water fountain on campus that you want to replicate.
  • Materials to take with you:
    • Camera phone. If you do not have a camera phone, see me for an alternative step.
    • Cloth measuring tape.
    • Paper/pencil

Step 2:
  • Use your camera phone to take ten (10) pics of the water fountain.
  • Strive for five (5) images at different angles and five (5) details (close-up).
  • You will have to refer to these images when building, so if you feel your water fountain needs more than 10 images, take as many as you need.

Step 3:
  • Use a cloth measuring tape to take detailed measurements of the water fountain.
  • Measure every shape, angle, line.
  • Create a diagram(s) with all your measurements, make many notes.

Step 4:
  • Build a small scale model of the water fountain. The model does not have to be "pretty" - you can use copy paper or scrap paper, scotch/mask tape.
  • Model should be approximately six inches in height (hint - a dollar bill measures six inches).

Step 5:
  • Begin building final structure out of cardboard.
  • A demo will be done in class to show students how to safely use a utility knife to cut the cardboard.
  • The final structure will be covered in duct tape. To ensure you have enough duct tape to cover the final solution, you can begin the construction with mask tape.

Step 6:
  • Field trip to visit actual water fountains.
  • Each student will carry their water fountain as we visit each student's water fountain on campus to see how the constructed water compares to the actual water fountain.
  • Bring your camera phone so another student can take a pic of you with your replica, next to the actual water fountain.

Post the following information on your blog that you are keeping for this class:
  • A photograph of your diagram with measurements.
  • A photograph of the paper model you made. Does not have to be professional image. Suggestion - Hold model in hand for scale in front of white wall. Feel free to take more than one image of the model.
  • At least one in-process photograph of the cardboard sculpture.
  • A photograph of you with the cardboard replica and actual water fountain.
  • Five (5) professional photographs of the final solution.
    • These photographs should include three (3) different angels and two (2) details.
    • Lighting should be free of shadows and bright so viewer can see all details in the artwork.
    • Take these photos in the photo studio or check out studio lights to photograph downstairs in Studio 3.
    • I will go over this information in class.
