Human Body Required Assignment Guidelines

Assignment:
-Construct a sculpture that can be worn by a person. Produce three professional photographs of yourself (or someone else) wearing the sculpture.

Objective:

-Development of an idea that challenges the student to conceive and execute in multiple processes.
-Develop visual work with content and meaning significant to the student.

Materials:
-Wire, tracing paper (optional), white craft paper, gel medium.
-You will also need: wire cutters, safety glasses, brushes, cup with water, scissors, exacto knife.  A stapler, tape or sewing can be used in construction.  Methods of attachment have to be hidden so final solution appears as only paper. Wire is permitted to show as long as it is incorporated into the design.
-Wire tips: 16 or 18 gauge wire is good.  However, smaller gauge can be used for details.  When it comes to wire, the higher the number, the thinner the wire.  Purchase your wire at home depot - sample packaging is available for you to look at in the classroom (taped inside of Extra Materials cabinet).   I suggest avoiding wire that is lubricated in oil if you don't want to get messy.
-The entire sculpture will not have any applied color.  You will be relying on the tones and shadows of tracing paper, white craft paper and wire.  Color can be used as a focal point.  Materials for color are your choice. If you choose this option, please speak with me so I can offer some options and guidance.

Getting Started:
Listen to Episode 468: Switcheroo from This American Life.  The link is below.  Write a personal response to the program and post on your blog.

Next:

-Find inspiration for your sculpture.
-Pull ideas from the following categories: literature, film, song lyrics, painting, sculpture, architecture, landscape.
-Three (3) sources of inspiration is required.  You can pull info off of this blog if you wish. I also have a pin interest board with more images. The title of the board is Sculpture Human Body Required.  Link here
-Post inspiration images on your blog and clearly state what inspires you and how you plan to use in your sculpture.

After you gather your ideas:
-Start building the sculpture.

Need To Know:
-The sculpture needs to cover at least 90% of your body
-Consider how you will use the elements and principles to communicate your intentions.
-Consider all formal and conceptual components when developing your design.
-The use of elements and principles are significant.  For example, will the sculpture have a focal point?  If so, what elements/principles will you use to create the focal point?  Is texture important to the sculpture?  What about organic lines and shapes?  Do organic lines and shapes visually communicate your idea? Or do you want to rely solely on rectilinear?  Or a combo?  Carefully consider how the elements and principles visually communicate the description of your idea.
-The photos that you take should demonstrate an awareness of visual communication.  Facial expressions (if face is showing) and body language are equally important as the sculpture.
-The surrounding environment is also important.  Carefully consider how the setting, or lack of, is important to the idea.
-Post your best three images on your class blog and present to the class.
-After the photos are taken, write a statement that discusses the decisions you made and why.

"Widely recognized as one of the most influential artists in the contemporary art world, Sherman has presented a sustained, eloquent and provocative exploration of the construction of contemporary identity drawn from the unlimited supply of images from movies, TV, magazines, the Internet, and art history. Working as her own model for more than 30 years, she has captured herself in a range of guises and personas which are at turns amusing and disturbing, distasteful and affecting.  To create her photographs, she assumes multiple roles of photographer, model, makeup artist, hairdresser, stylist and wardrobe mistress and has hitherto deftly altered her physique and surroundings to create a myriad of intriguing tableaus and characters from siren to clown to aging socialite." -source is Trendspot.com
